Storm, Hume Send #2 UNC Past Pitt
October 3, 2015 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (8-0-1, 4-0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) remained unbeaten on the season with goals from Colton Storm and Tucker Hume, while red-shirt keeper James Pyle earned his fourth shoutout of the season.
Carolina played most of the second half in the home teams final third of the field and it seemed only a matter of time before the Tar Heels would break through with a goal. Numerous shots went by the wayside before Pennsylvania native Colton Storm found the back of the net in the 85th minute.
The Mechanicsburg, Pa., product got forward from his back line position and placed a delicate shot into the lower-right corner from 12 yards, giving Carolina a much-needed 1-0 advantage with his second goal of the year.
Super sub Tucker Hume quickly made it 2-0 Tar Heels with his team-leading fifth goal of the year off a feed from Alex Olofson in the 87th minute.
The Tar Heels held a dominating 16-3 shot advantage over Pittsburgh (5-4-1, 0-4-0). UNC had 12 shots alone in the second half playing on the attack for most of the final 45 minutes.
The 8-0-1 record is the best start to a season in program history since the 1959 squad began its season at 9-0-0. Carolina also remains atop the Coastal Division standings with a perfect 4-0 slate.
It took a while but Carolina got its first quality look in the 24th minute. Jonathan Campbell's header found the foot of Storm and he ripped a shot on target that was saved by Panther keeper Dan Lynd, who made six saves on the night.
Pittsburgh played conservative throughout the match, and coupled with a stern Tar Heel defense, only had three shots, and two of those attempts were saved by Pyle.
Late in the opening 45 minutes, Nyambi Jabang made his season debut when he was inserted into the match for Alan Winn in the 39th minute. The red-shirt junior injured his knee back in the spring and missed the first eight games of the year. However, his dynamic play-making skills were felt immediately when he broke through a pair of Panther defenders that led to a shot from Raby George in the 42nd minute that went high and wide right.
On the road for the second time this season, Carolina went into intermission scoreless with Pittsburgh. Unfazed, the Tar Heels improved to 3-0-1 when tied at halftime.
UNC hosts nationally-ranked UNCW on Tuesday at 7 p.m. As part of the “Fill Fetzer” promotion, all tickets are $3 for the match against the Seahawks.
