Wright On The Money To A 3-0 Win
October 7, 2015 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL— Zach Wright scored a pair of first-half goals to send No. 2 North Carolina to a 3-0 victory over UNCW Tuesday night at Fetzer Field.
The win gives the Tar Heels its best start in program history at 9-0-1, and snapped a two-game losing streak to the 18th-ranked Seahawks.
UNCW (6-2-2) had its best look at goal in the 25th minute. Kellen Foster took a rip just inside the box, but a deflection put the ball on the foot of Daniel Escobar. His shot rolled just past James Pyle in goal, but heads-up defense from Jonathan Campbell kept the score at 0-0 as he took the ball of the end line.
Moments after Campbell saved the would-be goal at the opposite end, the Tar Heels went up 1-0 in the 26th minute. The senior found Tucker Hume in the box on a long pass, who headed it to Zach Wright to give the forward his third goal of the season.
After the goal, the Tar Heels pushed the offense and pace of the match. Wright took two shots for the Heels in a span of three minutes, both missing the crossbar by just a few inches.
However, his third attempt coming in the 36th minute, with an assist from David October, shook the net to push the Tar Heels up 2-0 and gave Wright his second goal of the night.
After the Tar Heels controlled the pace of play in the second half, Alan Winn added to the goal total with the help of Hume to put Carolina up 3-0. A rocket off his left foot in the 81st minute was Winn's fourth of the season.
This game marked the first time the Seahawks trailed at halftime this season, and the first time the team has given up more than two goals in a match all year.
Pyle made two saves to notch his fifth clean sheet of the year.
The Tar Heels will return to Fetzer on Saturday to take on the Syracuse Orange at 7 p.m.
