Carolina Draws At Virginia
October 31, 2015 | Men's Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 5 North Carolina men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 0-0 double-overtime draw at 13th-ranked Virginia on Friday night.
North Carolina (14-1-2, 6-1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) secured first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division last week, and will be the No. 2 seed in the ACC Championship. The Tar Heels will host a quarterfinal round match against either #7 seed Syracuse or 10th-seed NC State next Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
Playing the final 13 minutes down a man after Alan Winn was sent off with a Red Card, Carolina still fought to the bitter end against one of its longest-running rivals. Colton Storm sent the only shot of the double-overtime session wide of the goal with two seconds left.
UNC keeper James Pyle came up with four saves to keep Virginia off the score board. The Cavaliers have scored just once in the last nine matches against the Tar Heels since 2009.
The opening 45 minutes was a physical display of soccer by both teams. Carolina was whistled for 10 fouls, while the home-standing Cavaliers were charged with eight fouls of their own.
Pyle, making his first start in net for Carolina since Oct. 20, made a quality save off a shot from Edward Opoku in the ninth minute.
Carolina raced the other way and Alex Olofson registered his clubs first shot of the match in the 11th minute. The attempt was blocked, but setup a corner kick that kept the Tar Heels deep inside the Virginia final third.
Zach Wright took a crack in the 12th minute that was saved by 'Hoos keeper Jeff Caldwell. The sophomore forward tried a header minutes later searching for the game's first goal, but again Caldwell was in place for the save.
Tucker Hume, the ACC's leading scorer, was inserted into the Tar Heel lineup in the 32nd minute. Just over a minute later, Omar Holness was preparing for a corner kick, and similar to what has been the case all season long the ball found the foot of Hume and he took a shot that went high.
Coming out of intermission with the match scoreless, both teams looked for an early edge and Alan Winn nearly did just that when his shot went wide in the 52nd minute.
The fouls that were so frequent in the first half went by the wayside as the match moved into the later stages of regulation. Virginia's Sam Hayward had a header on target, but Pyle made a save in the 81st minute.
With the match moving into the 90th minute, Carolina earned a corner kick by Alex Olfoson. His service found Storm but his shot was sent wide at the 89:21 mark.
In the first 10-minute overtime period, Winn was shown a red card at the 97:01 mark. Virginia registered its only shot of the two extra sessions by Christophe Koffi moments later, but it was blocked and Carolina would end up with its second draw of the year, and first scoreless tie since 2013.
