Victoria McPherson Earns ACC Player of the Week
November 16, 2015 | Volleyball
Greensboro, N.C. – Carolina senior middle hitter Victoria McPherson was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Tar Heels to a pair of sweeps over the weekend. McPherson is third Tar Heel to earn the weekly conference honor this season, while the award is the third of the senior's career.
The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, native did not commit an attack error all weekend, leading the Tar Heels with 21 kills, hitting .488, while posting 10 blocks. McPherson opened the weekend by tallying 10 kills and five blocks to lead Carolina to a sweep of Pitt, then hit .611 with 11 kills and five blocks against Virginia Tech to capture UNC's ninth straight victory.
“Victoria has been playing so steady this season, so I am delighted for this recognition which she has earned,” said head coach Joe Sagula. “To have a weekend like she did with 21 kills and no errors in two big home matches along with being a force at the net in blocking says a lot about the effort and determination she has had all season. Our team put in such a great effort, so it is difficult to single out just one player, but Vic certainly deserves this distinction for a great effort in leading our team in two important matches.”
McPherson shares the honor with Louisville middle blocker Tess Clark, whose 35.5 points on the weekend led the Cardinals to wins over Miami and No. 20 Florida State. Teammate Molly Sauer picked up her second ACC Freshman of the Week award, totaling 44 digs, including 25 in four sets against Miami, to go with three service aces on the weekend.
Carolina, ranked No. 22 in this week's AVCA Poll, hosts NC State on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the final home match of the year, before finishing the 2015 season with three consecutive road matches.
