CHAPEL HILL—Basketball and biscuits may seem like an odd combination, unless, of course, you're a Carolina basketball fan. Over the past few years, Tar Heel fans have added “we want biscuits” to the list of normal chants shouted in the Dean Dome with the promise of discounted Bojangles biscuits if the team scores at least 100 points. At their first official game on Sunday, the JV basketball team proved they've earned some biscuits of their own with a 109 to 54 win over Mt. Olive's JV team.
Sophomore Lucas Bouknight led the Tar Heels at the half and had an overall 17 points against the Trojans, making him the leading scorer of the night, and one of six Tar Heels to score in double digits. When asked about the game Sunday, Bouknight credited the big win to their strong collective performance as a team, despite little errors here and there. “We put up a lot of points, considering it wasn't the best basketball we've played, but it also wasn't the best team we're going to face. It was a team effort though, and we had several guys putting up points in the double digits… That's hard to compete with.”
Coach C.B. McGrath was also pleased with the team overall, despite minor errors. “I really liked our guys effort on both ends of the court. I loved our balanced scoring and unselfishness, but I wish we would have played without fouling so much on the defensive end. Mt.Olive did a nice job attacking the lane with dribble penetration but we were terrific on the boards in the 2nd half.”
Each Tar Heel left the Dean Dome Sunday with points on the board, and perhaps with visions of biscuits dancing in their heads. Their next matchup is this Wednesday, November 18th at 4 o'clock versus Methodist's JV team.
