CHAPEL HILL—The JV Tar Heels kicked off December with their matchup against Davidson County Community College on December 1 before the varsity game against Maryland. The boys fought hard throughout the game, putting up 97 points, but came up short of Davidson County's 122, resulting in our first loss of the season.
When asked about the game, JV head coach C.B. McGrath said, “I've got to give Davidson County credit, they came in ready to play and executed their game plan. They made a ton of shots from all over the court, they drained a lot of 3's, and we were struggling to keep the ball out of the lane. They also rebounded well and put up a lot of competition on both ends.”
Davidson County shot nearly 60 percent from the three-point line, and 64 percent overall, easily giving the Tar Heels their toughest matchup thus far. Six Tar Heels ended up scoring in the double digits, but McGrath said it just wasn't enough. “[Davidson] ran the court and we didn't do a great job of getting back and getting matched up. We battled back a few times to close the gap but they were just too much for us tonight.”
In a post-game interview, UNC's Aaron Rohlman also shared his thoughts on the game: “We didn't play our best. They were a good team, but I don't think they were 20 points better than us. We'll practice hard this week and hopefully play better Sunday.” Rolhman, a sophomore and first-year player, led the team with 17 points and 9 rebounds, making it his best game this season.
The JV team will face Wake Tech in the Smith Center on Sunday, December 6th, at 3 o'clock.
