Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell
Opening Statement
“Needless to say we're very happy and pleased. First of all, Florida State is a great team. We scouted them and watched all the film, and they have no weaknesses. Gosh, they've got shooters, size, quickness and ball handlers. They're just a very, very good team. We had a few things we were trying to do on them, but we knew rebounding was major. We didn't outrebound them, but down the stretch, the last 12 minutes, we outrebounded them by eight. They had us by 13 or so, and that made a big difference. Allisha [Gray] has carried us a lot of times. The second half she had a great game. [Hillary] Summers went in there and played really, really well for us and made a big difference. We were trying to do some different things with them, and we got fortunate there at the end. Things went our way. We missed some shots, fast break layups and different things like that. We missed foul shots, we're going come in tomorrow and work on our foul shots. Hey, but we still won the game. These kids, they worked hard. They did a good job, and that was a good win for us.”
On the depth of the team
“We have good depth. We've been so beat up and banged up. Except for Xylina [McDaniel] and Megan [Buckland], who just had shoulder surgery, of course, they all can play. We play them all. We put everybody in. Everybody played tonight. I have a lot of confidence in them. I tell them, 'Hey, you can do this.' We put them in there and expect them to produce. They can't do something if they don't have the opportunity so we put them in there.”
On the collision that sidelined Danielle Butts
“It happened right in front of us. Yes, they were both going after the ball. She was in her line, and the girl crashed into her. He right away called the foul on Danielle [Butts]. I'm momma bear. You hurt one of my cubs and you're wrong. If my cub does something wrong, that's different. But you hurt one of my cubs, and momma bear gets upset. Of course they straightened it out later, but they came over there and gave me a warning. They said they hadn't made the call yet, but I said, 'He made the call.' He said, 'Yeah, but it was the wrong call.' You can't give me a warning whenever the referee makes a wrong call. She got hit pretty good. She got the breath knocked out of her. She got hit pretty good, but that was it. I'm going to protect my kids now. Don't mess with my kids.”
Allisha Gray, So., G.
On rebounding late in the game
“I just wanted to win. I didn't want to lose this game. Period. For the team, we all wanted to get 20 wins. The coaches told us the last 12 minutes of the game, if we win in rebounding, we'll win this game. That's exactly what we did.”
Hillary Summers, So., F.
On scoring early
“Coach Hatchell had been on us all week about competing, so that was mainly what I was thinking about the whole time. Just do everything I can and compete. I guess it just worked out.”
Florida State Head Coach Sue Semrau
On almost winning the first top-25 road game
“I think it was great. I credit Carolina. I thought they had a lot of fire, a lot of competitive spirit in them. Allisha Gray had a great game. I like it for us. I think we can get complacent, and we would certainly rather compete than be in a game and have an opportunity than not. We'll learn something from this, and going forward, we've got some more big games.”
On defense early in the game
“I feel like our defense is really our bread and butter and having Ivey [Slaughter] on the floor really helps us and she had to go out. I thought Shakayla [Thomas] looked like a freshman tonight, and she generally doesn't. I thought that maybe we had a little bit of confusion, and that's just not like us. But again, credit Carolina for taking advantage of it.”
Ivey Slaughter, F on the frustrations in the game
“My fouls. Like Coach [Semrau] told me, fouls are immature. I have to learn how to control them and not foul so early and put my team in a bind.”
Adut Bulgak, C on rebounding
“I was just being myself. What I do is rebound, and it shouldn't change, no matter who we play. “
