Tar Heels Emerge Victorious at NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – During the Tar Heels' second trip to NC State on Friday night, the Tar Heels emerged victorious, defeating NC State, Kent State and Rutgers. North Carolina tallied a total score of 194.950. UNC took the top two spots in the all-around competition.
“I don't recall any year that we have come to Raleigh twice and won both times,” said head coach Derek Galvin. “That is a great feeling.”
In the all-around competition, Morgan Lane notched a season-high 39.275, taking first place. Haley Watts scored a 39.025, placing second. In addition, Lexi Cappalli had a 38.750, finishing fourth.
Carolina began the night on the balance beam, tallying a 48.900. The Tar Heels placed three gymnasts in the top seven. Lane notched a 9.825, the highest score among all competitors. Haley Watts had a 9.725, taking sixth place. Beam specialist Janell Sargent scored a 9.700, tying for seventh place. In addition, Sarah Peterson had a 9.650.
“[We had a] scrappy effort on beam. It wasn't to the level of execution that we had been training, but we pulled through,” said Galvin.
The Tar Heels next competed on floor, notching a 48.900. Carolina received three of the top eight scores. Cappalli had a 9.850, taking fifth place. Lane tied for sixth place with a score of 9.825. Kaitlynn Hedelund tied for eighth place, scoring a 9.800.
On the vault, UNC finished with a 48.900. The Tar Heels placed three gymnasts in the top seven. Lane tied for second, scoring a 9.825. Cappalli and Watts both had a 9.800, tying for seventh place. In addition, Peterson notched a 9.775.
The Tar Heels finished the competition on the uneven bars, which proved to be the team's strongest apparatus of the evening. Carolina notched a score of 48.950. UNC had four gymnasts in the top ten. Lindsey Lemke scored a 9.825, taking fourth place. Lane and Cappalli both had a 9.800, tying for fifth place. Hedelund notched a 9.775, tying for tenth place among all competitors. In addition, Peterson added a 9.725.
“The focus by the team today was what we have been working on in training,” said Galvin.
UNC will return to action on Sat, Feb. 28 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Tar Heels will take on Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
