UNC Returns to Carmichael Arena to Take on William & Mary

Chapel Hill, N.C. – North Carolina returns to action on Sat, Feb. 7 in its second home competition of the season. The Tar Heels will take on William & Mary for the third time this season. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
This past Saturday, Carolina competed in Raleigh, N.C. where it defeated NC State and William & Mary, but was edged out by West Virginia. The Tar Heels posted a total score of 194.500, the second highest of the season.
“We are gearing up for the second half of the season,” said head coach Derek Galvin. We are almost at the midpoint [of the season] and we expect to be performing at a higher level in terms of team execution.”
During the second quad meet of the season, several Tar Heels had standout performances.
Morgan Lane tied for second place in the all-around competition, scoring a 39.125. On the beam, Lane was awarded a 9.875, the highest score among all competitors. On Tuesday, she was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week for the third consecutive week.
Sarah Peterson notched a 9.875 on vault, tying for second, and had a season-high 9.775 on beam, which tied for fifth. Peterson was named the EAGL Specialist of the Week for her performance.
Kaitlynn Hedelund had a 9.800 on bars, tying for second, and received a 9.750 on beam, which tied for sixth among all competitors. For the first time this season, Hedelund competed on vault, scoring a 9.700.
This weekend's opponent:
On Sat, Jan. 31, William & Mary was defeated by West Virginia, UNC and NC State. The Tribe tallied a total score of 192.125.
William & Mary's performance in Raleigh, N.C. was highlighted by the performance of Brittany Stover.
Brittany Stover tied with Morgan Lane in the all-around competition, notching a 39.125. Stover tied for second on vault, receiving a score of 9.875. Both scores tied for the third best in school history. Stover was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Gymnast of the Week for her performance.
Heading into this weekend's competition, the Tar Heels have a record of 8-3 (3-1 EAGL) while the Tribe have a record of 2-5.
“We are excited to compete in Carmichael Arena [this weekend]. After being on the road for three weeks, we are really eager to perform in front of our Tar Heel fans and show how much we have improved over the last month,” said Galvin.
Following Saturday's competition, North Carolina will be back in action on Sat, Feb. 14 in Chapel Hill, N.C. UNC will take on Georgia at 1 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
