March 1, 2015 | Women's Gymnastics
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – During the Tar Heels' second consecutive quad meet on Saturday, North Carolina defeated Temple but fell to West Virginia and Pittsburgh. UNC recorded a total score of 193.500. Two Tar Heel gymnasts placed in the top four of the all-around competition.
“I was disappointed [in tonight's meet] because we were in a very good position through the first three rotations,” said head coach Derek Galvin. “If we could have had a few solid routines on bars, then we would have been in the mix.”
In the all-around competition, Kaitlynn Hedelund tallied a 38.950, tying for first place. Morgan Lane placed fourth with a score of 38.850.
North Carolina began this evening's competition on the balance beam, scoring a 48.850. Three UNC gymnasts finished in the top eight. Lane tied for second place with a score of 9.875. Sarah Peterson notched a season-high 9.800, taking sixth place. Hedelund had a 9.750, tying for eighth. In addition, Josselyn Mackey competed in beam for the first time this season, where she scored a 9.725, tying for eleventh.
“In Haley Watts' dismount on beam, she injured her knee and was unable to compete for the rest of the night. Despite Haley's injury, the team kept their focus really well through beam and floor,” said Galvin.
The Tar Heels next competed on floor, which proved to be the team's strongest apparatus of the evening. UNC notched a score of 48.900. North Carolina placed two gymnasts in the top ten of competition. Lane scored a 9.875, tying for third place. Lexi Cappalli notched a 9.775, tying for tenth place among all competitors. In addition, two gymnasts had season-high scores on floor. Kristin Aloi and Lauren Weisel both notched season-high scores of 9.750.
On the vault, UNC scored a 48.350. Three Tar Heel gymnasts placed in the top twelve. Hedelund and Peterson both notched scores of 9.725, tying for eighth place. Lane scored a 9.700, tying for twelfth place. In addition, Weisel added a 9.625 and Cappalli had a 9.575.
Carolina concluded tonight's competition on the uneven bars where the team scored a 47.400. UNC placed three gymnasts in the top eleven of competition. Lindsey Lemke notched a 9.800, taking third place. Hedelund took fifth place with a score of 9.725 and Cappalli finished eleventh with a 9.550.
“We did not perform very well on bars,” said Galvin. “Apart from Kaitlynn and Lindsey, the gymnasts had problems in their routines. That's where the meet fell apart for us.”
“We've got a week to get ready for Pittsburgh next Saturday,” said Galvin.
UNC will return to action on Sat, March 7 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels will square off against Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
