Tar Heels Sweep GMU In Spring Training Finale

The UNC rowing team capped a week of spring training with an afternoon of racing, taking on George Mason Friday in Lake Lure, N.C. The competition initially was scheduled for Saturday but was moved up a day based on the forecast of bad weather for Saturday.
The teams faced off in four races: varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight. Tar Heel boats swept all four races, kicking off the season on a high note.
“Any time you walk away with a victory in all races, you feel very good about the progress you are making,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “Carolina Rowing has now accomplished that goal in both races we have had so far this spring.”
In the varsity eight, UNC finished in 7:05.65, ahead of GMU at 7:09.02.
The second varsity eight was a larger field, with UNC's first novice eight and Bryn Mawr's varsity eight also competing. The Tar Heels' 2V8 was first in 7:09.47, followed by the Carolina novice boat in 7:14.54. Bryn Mawr was third and GMU fourth.
In the varsity four, UNC took the top two spots with the varsity four finishing in 8:20.11 and the novice four in 8:29.72.
In the novice eight, UNC's second novice eight boat was first in 7:42.5 with the GMU first novice eight finishing in 7:58.2.
“We had a great training trip with good work ethic and great attitudes,” Haney said. “Because of that, we were able to take away a lot of positives technically as well as in how we began to implement our race plan.”
Next up for the Tar Heels is a race at Old Dominion next Saturday. The Tar Heels will compete twice more on the final weekend of the month, traveling to Georgetown on March 28 and to the Occoquan (Va.) Sprints on March 29.
