Multiple PRs Set At Carolina Relays

CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina track and field teams kicked off their outdoor season with the Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays on Friday. Multiple Tar Heels won their individual events and set personal records throughout the day.
“I think it was a very good first day for us,” head coach Harlis Meaders said. “We were really glad to see some long throws and fast races today. A lot of kids had great debuts for the outdoor season.”
Sarah Howard made her 2015 track and field debut Friday with a victory in the women's shot put. Howard threw 53-3 ¾ (16.25 meters) to win by 2.5 meters. Howard also took fourth in the women's discus at 149-3 ¼ (45.50 meters).
Hannah Christen led the field of the women's 2,000 steeplechase runners taking first in the event at 6:47.30. Stella Radford and Caroline O'Hea followed up in third and fourth, respectively. Radford timed in at 7:03.10 while O'Hea finished in 7:04.63.
In the men's 3,000, Carolina took 1-5 with Logan Carroll leading the field. Carroll crossed the finish line at 8:41.85. Mike Jacobs finished six seconds behind Carroll while Chris Madaffari finished at 8:50.44. Braedon Koerwitz finished fourth and Bryan Noreen took fifth.
Very similar results on the women's side of the 3,000. Karley Rempel took first at 9:44.94. Emma Astrike-Davis, Mattie Blue, Jill Hardies and Mattie Webb took 3-6 and finished over 10 minutes.
Houston Summers took second in the men's javelin at 212-3 (64.70 meters) while Zach Gray finished third at 183-7 (55.97 meters).
Tory Kemp threw a personal record in the javelin at 119-11 (36.55 meters) and finished fourth overall. Emily Godwin also threw a personal record 107-10 (32.87 meters) in the event for sixth. Kemp also took first in the women's long jump at 18-1 ¼ (5.52 meters).
Jon Beyle finished third in the men's discus and threw a collegiate PR at 151-3 ¼ (46.11 meters).
Cierra Dunston was able to set a collegiate PR in the 200, finishing at 25.49 for fourth place.
“We'll get a chance to see some more people in their outdoor events tomorrow,” Meaders said. “We add the 110 hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, but we also have kids who are anxious to put on the Carolina jersey for the first time this season. We'll have a lot more Carolina kids tomorrow and we're excited to see some great performances.”
