March 25, 2015 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- Hunter Williams and four relievers combined for a three-hit shutout and No. 18 North Carolina thumped visiting Appalachian State 9-0 Tuesday evening at Boshamer Stadium. Skye Bolt hit his fourth home run of the year and Korey Dunbar continued his hot hitting with two hits, including his team-leading seventh double.
Carolina (15-9) jumped on Appalachian State starter Reed Howell early and never let up. Zack Gahagan and Logan Warmoth had run-scoring hits in the first and Landon Lassiter added a two-run triple in the second.
The Tar Heels made it 7-0 with a three-run fifth, highlighted by Adam Pate's pinch double to left center. Bolt's blast to deep left accounted for the final runs in the seventh to cap a 12-hit night for the hosts.
Williams' third start of the year was his best, as the freshman right-hander pitched six scoreless innings. Prior to Tuesday, a Carolina midweek starter had not gotten out of the third, but Williams needed just 90 pitches to get 18 outs, striking out six.
Zach Rice, Hansen Butler, Spencer Trayner and Jason Morgan combined to hold the Mountaineers (7-17) to just one hit over the final three innings.
Carolina will host Miami in a three-game series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
