Women Golfers Tied 6th At LSU Tiger Classic; Cloots 3rd

BATON ROUGE, LA. – The North Carolina women's golf team tied for sixth place with at 607 total going into the final round of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic played at the par-72 University Club. Carolina fired a 6-over-par 294 on Saturday. Tar Heel Leslie Cloots fired a 1-under 71 and is in third place in the individual race.
Cloots, who was tied for the lead entering Saturday's round, is just three strokes behind the leader with a 1-under 143 total. The sophomore from Antwerp, Belgium, fired four birdies, one bogey and one double bogey en route to her 1-under 71. Freshman Bryana Nguyen, from Columbia, Md., is tied for 33rd place at 10-over 154. She fired a 2-over 74 in the second round on three birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.
Two freshman, Cheni Xu and Lexi Harkins, are both deadlocked in 38th place with 11-over 155 totals. Xu, from Zhuhai, China, fired a 1-over 73 on Saturday posting four birdies and five bogeys while Harkins, from Crystal Lake, Ill., carded a 4-over 76 after carding two birdies and six bogeys. Maia Schechter, a senior from Takoma Park, Md., shot a 6-over 78 in the second round for a 164 total and is tied for 78th place. Junior Elizabeth Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, is competing as an individual and is tied for 74th with a 162 total after shooting an 81 on Saturday.
Host LSU fired an 8-under 280 in the second round and still holds the lead over the 16-team field at 1-over 577. Tulane is in second place at 14-over 590 after carding an even par 288 in the second round. Mississippi State is one stroke back in third place at 15-over 591. TCU is fourth with a 598 total while Notre Dame is fifth at 604 and Carolina and Colorado are tied for sixth with 607 totals. Rounding out the top 10 are Denver in eighth place at 611, Wake Forest ninth at 614 and UCF 10th at 618.
Madelene Sagstrom of LSU jumped into the individual lead at 4-under 140 after firing a 5-under 67 in the second round. Elise Bradley, also from LSU, shot a 4-under 68 and is two strokes back in second place at 2-under 142. Carolina's Cloots is another stroke back in third place at 1-under 143 after firing a 1-under 71. Three players are tied for fourth place at even par 144 – Mississippi State's Chieh Jessica Peng and Tulane's Gemma Dryburgh and Emily Penttila. Rica Tse of Mississippi State and Kelly McGovern of TCU are tied for seventh place at 1-over 145.
The final round 54-hole event will be played Sunday at The Univeristy Club which features a par 72, 6,251-yard layout. There will be a shotgun start in the final round beginning at 8:30 Sunday morning. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com and Golfstat.com.
