Tar Heels Hammer Their Way Past Ohio And FDU

Chapel Hill – The bats were alive today for the Tar Heels on the second day of play for the Carolina Classic. UNC tallied 22 hits and 21 runs combined in its two games on Saturday, defeating Ohio 9-1 and Fairleigh Dickinson 13-2 to extend its winning streak to nine games.
UNC blasted six home runs on the day, two of them belonging to Tracy Chandless. Sophomore Jill Ferraro hit the first homer of her Carolina career against FDU.
Game One
Ohio pitcher Mikayla Cooper walked in the first run of the day before Lauren Walker singled through the left side to make it 2-0 Tar Heels after the first inning.
Sydney Matzko started in the circle for UNC, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing one run and one hit while striking out three. Kaylee Carlson would finish the game in the circle, striking out two while walking only one Ohio batter.
The Bobcats picked up their lone run of the day in the third inning on a fielder's choice.
A Taylor Wike single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth brought home pinch runner Jordan Scarboro, giving Coach Donna J. Papa's squad back their two run lead.
Carolina broke the game wide open in the sixth inning beginning with a towering two-run home run by Lauren Walker that went clear over the scoreboard in left field. Tracy Chandless would make it back-to-back home runs with her solo shot right after. Kati Causey would pick up an RBI double and Ohio's Lauren McClary would walk in the next two runs, giving Carolina the 9-1 win in six innings.
Game 2
The Tar Heels got started again early, this time with a two –run Amber Parrish blast in the first. They would pick up five more runs in the second after Aquilla Mateen cleared the bases with a triple and Kristen Brown went downtown for a two-run homer of her own.
Fairleigh Dickinson managed its only offense in the third inning after Madelaine Wilen hit a sacrifice fly and Alex Portesi singled up the middle to bring in a run.
Kendra Lynch pitched four innings for UNC, allowing only three hits and two runs while fanning four. Lauren Fuller came in in the fifth to close the game, striking out one.
UNC sealed the game in the fourth with three more runs on a Darby Rosen RBI single and Jill Ferraro's two-run slam.
The Heels will be back in action tomorrow to close out the Carolina Classic against Charlotte at 3 p.m.
