Tar Heels Take Doubleheader Against GT On Senior Day
April 11, 2015 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina softball team celebrated senior day in style on Saturday afternoon, taking both games of the doubleheader against Georgia Tech by scores of 12-1 and 1-0.
Game One
It was two seniors that led the way in game one, as Amber Parrish and Jordan Scarboro combined for nine RBIs.
After blasting three home runs across the doubleheader against Longwood on Wednesday, Amber Parrish picked up right where she left off, hitting a three-run dinger in the first off of GT pitcher Kylie Kleinschmidt to give UNC the lead
Taylor Wike added an RBI single in the second, and Aquilla Mateen's sacrifice hit brought in another score, making it 5-0 UNC after two innings.
After Kleinschmidt walked Kati Causey with the bases loaded to allow another Tar Heel run in the third, Jordan Scarboro singled up the middle to bring in two more.
Georgia Tech picked up its only score of the day in the top of the fourth after Samantha Pierannunzi singled to right field with runners on second and third with two outs. Maddie Lionberger scored on the play but Kendra Lynch's throw from right was able to beat Colleen Darragh to the plate for the final out of the inning.
Scarboro put the game away for good in the bottom of the fourth, belting a grand slam to make it a 12-1 Carolina advantage. Scarboro finished game one 3-3 with six runs batted in. North Carolina tallied 11 hits in the game.
Kaylee Carlson notched another win to her resume, pitching four innings before Lauren Fuller came in to finish the game in the fifth.
Game Two
In a completely different contest from the first, it was the UNC defense that won the game for the hosts.
The Yellow Jacket's starter Christina Biggerstaff did not allow a single Carolina hit, but walked 11 batters, including four in the second inning, which would result in the only run of the game.
Georgia Tech recorded seven hits against starting pitcher Sydney Matzko, putting the freshmen in dangerous situations with runners in scoring position multiple times. The young hurler showed great poise in the circle and maintained her composure throughout, and her teammates behind her never faltered.
The key play of the game came in the top of the fifth with one out and GT's Samantha Pierannunzi on second base. Katie Johnsky roped a pitch into the gap between left and center field for a sure fire RBI, but Jordan Scarboro got on her horse and made the leaping grab. Pierannunzi would tag up on the play and take third but Karly Fullem flied out centerfield the next at-bat.
The series will conclude with game three tomorrow at 1 p.m.
