Tar Heels Hit Three Long Balls To Complete Sweep Of GT
April 12, 2015 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina softball team completed the sweep of Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon, belting three home runs en route to 5-0 victory.
“It's really tough to beat a team three times, so I'm really proud of the team”, said Head Coach Donna J. Papa. “I'm really proud of the effort our team put forth.”
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, GT starting pitcher Kylie Kleinschmidt walked Jenna Kelly and Kati Causey and hit Kendra Lynch with a pitch, leaving the bases loaded for Jordan Scarboro with two outs. Scarboro hit a sharp grounder to the Yellow Jackets' shortstop who misplayed the ball, allowing Kelly to score the first run of the day.
Amber Parrish made it a two run game in the third, hitting a solo shot down the left field line that just stayed fair. The long ball was Parrish's 16th of the season and fifth of the week.
The Tar Heels piled on three more runs in the fifth behind a home run from Kristen Brown and a two-run blast by Kendra Lynch. The dinger was Brown's 18th of 2015, leading the team as well as the ACC.
Sydney Matzko picked up the win in the circle, not allowing a Georgia Tech hit until the top of the fifth. Matzko fanned four batters before Kaylee Carlson entered the game in the sixth to complete the shutout. The two freshmen combined to allow just three hits.
UNC improves to 31-10 and 13-3 in ACC play and will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Campbell.
