No. 18 Tar Heels Top Campbell, 8-3
April 22, 2015 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- Korey Dunbar and Tyler Ramirez homered as No. 18 North Carolina beat visiting Campbell 8-3 Tuesday evening at Boshamer Stadium. Skye Bolt added three hits for the Tar Heels, who improved to 25-15 ahead of Wednesday's trip to UNCW. Trevor Kelley allowed just three hits over 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of Benton Moss for his fourth win of the season.
Campbell (25-16) opened the scoring thanks to three infield singles in the first, but the Tar Heels responded in the bottom half. Heath Bowers (6-4) issued four of his five walks in the inning, including a bases-loaded free pass to Bolt, and balked in another.
Single runs in the third and fifth gave the Camels a 3-2 lead, but Carolina exploded for five hits in a four-run fifth to take control. Dunbar's two-run double made it 4-3 after Landon Lassiter led off the frame with a hustle double and moved to third on a Ramirez single. Two-base hits from Joe Dudek and Bolt pushed the advantage to 6-3, and Kelley handcuffed the Campbell offense the rest of the way.
The senior righty needed just 39 pitches to get the final 13 outs of the game after Moss departed with two on and two out in the fifth. It was Kelley's NCAA-leading 29th appearance of the year, and he lowered his ERA to 2.17.
Dunbar and Ramirez added solo home runs for the final margin as the Camels mustered just three hits against Kelley.
Steven Leonard, Cedric Mullins and Sam Rector had two hits apiece to lead the Campbell attack. Bowers, who entered the game with just 13 walks all season, allowed four runs on five hits and five walks and struck out six over four-plus innings.
Hunter Williams will take the ball for Carolina Wednesday when the Tar Heels visit UNCW at 6 p.m.
