Women Golfers Receive NCAA Regional Bid

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.– The University of North Carolina women's golf team was one of 72 teams to receive a bid to participate in the NCAA Regionals. The Tar Heels will be playing in the NCAA Notre Dame Regional May 7-9. The 54-hole event will be played at Warren Country Club in South Bend, Ind. In addition to the 72 teams, 24 individuals received a bid to play in the four regionals.
The top six teams will advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 22-27 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. A new format will be introduced to women's golf at the NCAA Championships this year. Seventy-two holes of stroke play will determine the individual champion and the eight teams that advance to match play.
“We are very excited to be competing at Notre Dame for the NCAA Regionals,” says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. “We have competed against the majority of the teams that will be there. Coming off the ACC Championships, the team has a great deal of confidence going into the regionals. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
Nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams received bids to extend their seasons. Carolina (#13 seed) is one of five ACC teams at the Notre Dame Regional in South Bend. The others are Duke (#2 seed), Wake Forest (#4 seed), Notre Dame (#8 seed) and Louisville (#11 seed). Two ACC teams will be playing at the St. George (Utah) Regional – Virginia (#3 seed) and Miami (#8 seed). NC State (#11 seed) will be playing in the Raleigh (N.C.) Regional while Florida State (#8 seed) will be in the San Antonio (Tex.) Regional.
Carolina is coming off its best performance of the year, tying for third place at the ACC Championships. The Tar Heels carded three additional top 10 finishes – a seventh-place finish at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, a tie for seventh at the Lady Paladin Invitational and a 10th-place finish at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational.
This marks Carolina's 22nd appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Since the regional format was instituted in women's golf in 1993, the Tar Heels have received a bid in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998. 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. All of these appearances were in the East Regional except 2008 (West), 2012 (West), 2014 (Central) and this year (Notre Dame Regional).
The complete list of teams participating in the NCAA Notre Dame Regional are as follows (by seed):Arizona, Duke, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, University of California-Davis, Pepperdine, Tulane, Notre Dame, Purdue, Kent State, Louisville, San Jose State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Harvard, Troy, Eastern Kentucky and Youngstown State. The individual participants are Madchen Ly of CSU Fresno, Elizabeth Tong of Indiana, Martha Edberg of CSU Fullerton, Leilanie Kim of Idaho, Gabby Yurik of Michigan State and Michaela Fletcher of Memphis.
