GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot a 25-over-par 313 in the first round of the Bryan Park National Collegiate and is in 15th place. The Tar Heels fought very windy conditions and were led by sophomore Leslie Cloots who fired a 4-over 76 on the par-72 Bryan Park Champions Course.
“We started out well,” says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. “The conditions got worse as the day went on and we did not handle the conditions as well as other teams. We know tomorrow will be similar conditions and have a game plan to do better. It is a very tight field and know we can make up shots the next two days.”
Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, fired two birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey en route to her 76. Both of her birdies came on the back nine, on holes #10 and #15. Three Tar Heels carded a seven-over 79 in the first round and are tied for 48th place – senior Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md.; freshman Lexi Harkins, from Crystal Lake, Ill.; and freshman Cheni Xu, from Zhuhai, China.
Bryana Nguyen, a freshman from Columbia, Md., shot a 9-over 81 on Friday and is tied for 72nd place. Sophomore Rachel Jones, from Asheboro, N.C., is competing as an individual, shot an 87 and sits in a tie for 92nd place.
Virginia leads the 18-team field after shooting a 9-over-par 297 in the first round. Wake Forest is just one stroke back in second place at 10-over 298. Auburn is in third place at 11-over 299 while Vanderbilt is fourth at 12-over 300 and Florida and Michigan State are tied for fifth with 302 totals. Louisville and Kentucky are tied for seventh at 304 while Northwestern is ninth at 305 and Florida State 10th at 306.
Allison Emrey of Wake Forest fired a 3-under-par 69 in the first round to grab the individual lead. Briana Mao of Virginia and Karolina Vickova of Florida are one stroke back in a tie for second place at 2-under 70. There is a three-way tie for fourth place at even par 72 between Kentucky's Sarah Harris, Wake Forest's Sierra Sims and Auburn's Kelli Murphy. Another three players are tied for seventh place at 1-over 73 – Vanderbilt's Alexandra Farnsworth, Louisville's Emily Haas and Auburn's Alex Harrell.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at the Bryan Park Champions Course, which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout. Second-round play begins at 8:20 Saturday morning with the Tar Heels starting on the #10 tee beginning at 9:05. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com and Golfstat.com.
