Ben Griffin, a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina, has qualified to play in the 2015 United States Amateur Golf Championship.
Griffin tied for second at a sectional qualifier that was played July 14-15 at the Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines and earned one of three automatic spots to play in the main U.S. Amateur field.
Griffin shot rounds of 66 and 71 for a two-day total of 137. That was five shots out of the lead and three shots clear of fourth place. The top three finishers in the two-day event qualified automatically for the U.A. Amateur, which will be played August 17-23 at Olympia Fields Golf Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.
Joining Griffin as qualifiers were medalist Miller Capps of Denver, N.C., and Stephen Franken on Raleigh, N.C. Capps shot a 10-under par 62 today and finished at 132. Franken shot 67-70 to tie Griffin for second at 137.
The Chapel Hill native was a first-team All-ACC and honorable mention PING All-America as a freshman at UNC last season.
