Sports Medicine Proactively Prepares For 2015
July 31, 2015 | Football
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina football hosted its annual preseason emergency medical management meeting Thursday at the Kenan Football Center in preparation for the 2015 season.
The purpose of the meeting was to bring together everyone connected with a potential gameday medical emergency and discuss updates in emergency management policies, including new recommendations for spine boarding and medical spotter policy recently enacted by the ACC. Most importantly, the meeting gave medical personnel an opportunity to practice the procedures.
Included in the meeting were all football sports medicine (athletic trainers and physicians), gameday operations administrators, local EMS representatives and several other gameday personnel.
"Although serious traumatic injuries are rare, preparation and practice will promote successful outcomes," says Dr. Mario Ciocca, UNC's Director of Sports Medicine. "It is important for everyone involved to feel comfortable with their responsibilities during an emergency response. Kenny Boyd (football head athletic trainer) did a great job accomplishing this by bringing together all the components involved in dealing with serious injury and ensuring that our procedures are consistent with best practices for athlete care."
