Tar Heels Announce 2015-16 Non-Conference Schedule
July 8, 2015 | Men's Basketball
The Temple game is one of four non-Atlantic Coast Conference games the Tar Heels will play on neutral courts. Carolina is playing in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, Mo., on November 23-24. Kansas State, Missouri and Northwestern join UNC in the field. (ESPN will announce the matchups at a later date).
The Tar Heels play UCLA on Saturday, Dec. 19, in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the CBS Sports Classic. The Tar Heels have won seven of 10 previous games against the Bruins, including a 78-56 triumph last season in the Bahamas.
This is the second year of the CBS Sports Classic. Last season, Carolina defeated Ohio State, and Kentucky defeated UCLA. UNC and Kentucky will meet in 2016-17 in Las Vegas in year three of the event. The Wildcats and Buckeyes meet in the other game in this year's doubleheader in Brooklyn.
Carolina and Temple have split six previous games, including the most recent matchup, a 75-72 Tar Heel victory in the Meadowlands in the 1991 NCAA East Regional final. The Tar Heels have played 15 previous games in Annapolis, all against the Naval Academy, but have not played there since Jan. 25, 1947.
UNC will play host to seven non-ACC regular-season games at the Smith Center, including Fairfield (Nov. 15) and Wofford (Nov. 18) in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, Maryland (Dec. 1) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, Davidson (Dec. 6), Tulane (Dec. 16), Appalachian State (Dec. 21) and UNCG (Dec. 28).
The Tar Heels and Terrapins last met on February 4, 2014, a 75-63 Carolina triumph in the Smith Center. That game was the last time the teams played each other as members of the ACC. Last year, Maryland's first in the Big Ten Conference, was the first season in which the teams did not play against each other since 1953-54.
Fairfield and UNC played on March 13, 1997, in the NCAA Tournament first round in Winston-Salem. The top-seeded Tar Heels trailed by seven at the half but beat the Stags, 82-74, for the 876th win in Dean Smith's career. The win tied Smith with Adolph Rupp for the most wins in NCAA Division I history.
UNC is 2-0 against Wofford. The previous meetings were in 1922 in Bynum Gym and 1926 in the Indoor Athletic Court, Carolina's first two home venues.
Carolina has won 13 of 14 previous games against Tulane with the most recent matchup played in Charlotte during the 1995-96 season. The Green Wave will be making its first appearance in Chapel Hill since Nov. 20, 1982, a 70-68 triple overtime win by UNC in Carmichael Auditorium. Former Tar Heel guard Shammond Williams is an assistant coach with Tulane.
The Smith Center also will play host to an exhibition game against Guilford on November 6th.
The Tar Heels will play away games at Northern Iowa (Nov. 21, in a homecoming for senior guard Marcus Paige) and Texas (Dec. 12).
Carolina will be playing Northern Iowa for the first time. The Texas game will mark the seventh time UNC has played in the Erwin Center. The Longhorns are 2-0 against the Tar Heels in UT's on-campus facility, and Carolina is 4-0 in the arena in NCAA Tournament play (in 1990 and 2000).
The ACC will announce each school's 18-game conference schedule later this summer.
