Tar Heels Scrimmage Old Dominion
August 23, 2015 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With the preseason winding down, the UNC field hockey team scrimmaged Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium for its final outside competition before the season opener. The Tar Heels will play a Blue-White scrimmage on Sunday morning at 11 then head into a game week schedule in preparation for facing Michigan on Aug. 29 in Ann Arbor, Mich., as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
“We really appreciate Old Dominion traveling down to scrimmage us in the preseason,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said after the game. “I think it was an invaluable experience for both teams.”
The teams played 70 minutes of regulation, five minutes of seven-a-side and then a shootout, encountering a wide range of game situations.
“The game showed us some things we still need to work on,” Shelton said. “We got great performances from a lot of key people on the team, especially our young players.
“I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, where we have a back-to-back opportunity to prepare for next weekend.”
The season's opening weekend will include back-to-back games, with UNC taking on Iowa on Sunday. That game will also be played in Ann Arbor.
