September 15, 2015 | Women's Golf
HANAHAN, S.C. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team concluded their opening tournament of the 2015-16 season at the Powerade Cougar Classic on Tuesday. The team finished tied for 12th at 33-over-par, 897.
“Overall we saw a lot of great things happen at the Cougar,” said head coach Jan Mann. “We are very proud of Elizabeth (Mallett) for her consistent play and great finish today after a rough start. It was also great to see Kelly (Whaley) finish strong in her last round of her first collegiate event. I know she will be a very strong player for us throughout her four years. This week did show us that we still have some areas to improve upon in our performance on the course. Even though we have a short turn around before we head to Furman, we can make the adjustments and improvements that we need to have a successful event at the Lady Paladin.”
The team finished today's round at 13-over-par 301. Senior Elizabeth Mallett posted the best 18-hole score of any Tar Heel this weekend with an even par 72. Mallett had four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in the final round. Mallett jumped 16 spots in the individual ranks, finishing tied for 29th. Freshman Kelly Whaley carded a 1-over-par 73 in the final round. She was 2-under in her first nine holes with four birdies in that stretch. Whaley jumped 22 spots and finished 12-over 228 for the tournament and tied for 60th. Sophomore Bryana Nguyen had two birdies and seven bogeys to finish 5-over for today. She tied for 35th at 8-over-par among all individuals. Leslie Cloots and Lexi Harkins finished 7-over and 8-over, respectively. Cloots had four bogeys and one triple bogey while Harkins had nine bogeys and one birdie. Cloots finished the tournament tied for 50th at 10-over while Harkins finished 16-over and tied for 77th.
The Tar Heels' lone individual Rachel Jones shot 13-over today and finished tied for 84th at 19-over-par.
Arkansas, preseason No. 4, won the Cougar Classic at 7-under-par 897. Georgia jumped to second after a third-round best 1-under 287 to get to even par. Virginia finished 1-over 865 for third while Florida took fourth at 5-over. Clemson was a distant fifth at 14-over-par. Only eight strokes separated teams from sixth to 13th.
