The UNC men's tennis team opened the 2015 fall season in Cary, N.C., over the weekend, winning three flights (2 singles, 1 doubles), the most of any participating team. On Sunday, Tar Heels competed in all three singles finals, with senior Brett Clark and sophomore Robert Kelly emerging with straight set victories.
Clark defeated NC State's Nick Horton 7-6(5), 6-2 to capture the A Flight title of the Cary 4+1 “James Bonk” Invitational. The Naples, Fla., native improved his career singles record to 86-24, inching closer to the top 10 of the program's all-time wins list.
Kelly defeated opponents from Notre Dame, Auburn, Old Dominion and, on Sunday, Wake Forest's Maksim Kahn in route to the C Flight Singles title.
Clark and Kelly were equally dominant in doubles, dropping seven games over their three matches. Clark/Kelly defeated Duke's Chamdani/Li, 8-4 for the A Flight title on Saturday morning. The nation's 14th-ranked team, Clark/Kelly are 20-5 playing together over the last nine months.
Freshman Anu Kodali won the first three singles matches of his career, including two marathon three-setters on Saturday. Kodali upset the top seed in his flight, NC State's #71 Simon Norenius, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to earn a spot in the B flight final. Facing another nationally-ranked opponent on Sunday, Kodali lost a closely-contested match to Auburn's #105 Maxime Hinnisdaels, 6-4, 6-4.
Kodali and freshman Bo Boyden also won two matches to reach the B flight doubles final, falling to Auburn 8-6. Boydon won the first two singles matches of his career to reach the semifinals. In Sunday's third place (B flight) match, Boydon dropped a close match to nationally-ranked Norenius.
