Carolina In The Mix At Tobacco Road Multis
January 22, 2016 | Track & Field
CHAPEL HILL – Paul Haley earned 2,921 points in the first four events of the men's heptathlon and sits in fourth with three events remaining at the Tobacco Road Multis. Nick Futia finished with 2,365 points and is in seventh.
“It's difficult to say – if you just look at the numbers – that you're pleased with his performance, but if you saw some of the things he did, you'd be excited,” assistant head coach Josh Langley said of Haley. “He had two very big throws in the shot put and they were fouls, but they weren't big fouls. Based off the numbers, yeah, we are disappointed, but if you saw the performance, we're excited.”
Haley ran 7.30 in the 60-meter dash and jumped 22-5 ¾ (6.85 meters) in the long jump. Haley fouled his first attempt in the long jump that might have rattled him according to Langley. His one throw in the shot was to ensure points in the event after he fouled his two monstrous first throws. Haley cleared 6-5 (1.96 meters) in the high jump to end the meet. Haley is in fourth, but is less than 100 points from first place. Haley is 2015 ACC Indoor Champion in the heptathlon.
Futia ran 7.56 in the 60, jumped 5.94 meters, threw 10.85 meters in the shot and cleared 1.72 meters, a personal best, in the high jump.
“The best thing Nick has done for himself is that he's become a student of all the events,” Langley said. “He's become a great training partner for Paul. He wants to be the best he can be, but he also wants to help Paul anyway he can and Paul feels the same way about Nick. You can't have two better training partners. He's just going to keep working hard because that's what he does.”
The Tobacco Road Multis will continue tomorrow at noon, weather permitting. The heptathlon will conclude its final three events while the pentathlon will go through the entirety of its five events. Check GoHeels.com for updates on the continuation of the meet.
