The Tar Heels are 4-0 this spring after picking up pair of wins in ITA Kickoff Weekend play a week ago to earn a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.
Illinois (3-0) also qualified to play in Charlottesville, beating No. 25 Northwestern and Notre Dame. The Illini will play at No. 23 Duke Friday evening prior to taking on UNC.
Notes on the match:
• North Carolina and Illinois have faced off five times over the past four season. Two of those meetings have come in NCAA Tournament play, and one in ITA Kickoff Weekend action.
• Both of last year's meetings were decided by 4-3 scores, coming down to the last match on the court. In Champaign, Ill., on Jan. 31, Farris Gosea edged UNC's Brayden Schnur in the deciding third-set tiebreak. The teams met again in Waco, Texas, on May 14 in the NCAA round of 16. With UNC trailing 3-2, Schnur and Ronnie Schneider won tense third sets within minutes of each other to clinch the Tar Heels' berth in the 2015 NCAA quarterfinals.
