January 31, 2016 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina (12-11, 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) had its eight-game winning streak snapped against the Wolfpack, who earned its first win over the Tar Heels since February 2011.
Jamie Cherry and Destinee Walker paced Carolina with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Dominique Wilson scored a game-high 21 points for NC State (16-6, 7-2). Miah Spencer had 20 points.
NC State broke open a close game at the half by outscoring the Tar Heels, 28-11, in the third quarter for a 61-39 advantage. The Wolfpack shot 66.7 percent from the field in the quarter, making 10 of its 15 shot attempts.
Carolina was down just 19-17 after the first quarter. It was a back-and-forth affair with eight lead changes in the quarter, while both teams combined to take 20 three-pointers with the Wolfpack making four to the Heels' three that proved to be the difference in the game through 10 minutes.
The Wolfpack was able to use a 7-0 run early in the second quarter to gain some breathing room. Walker got UNC back within 28-26, before a late three-pointer from Spencer helped give NC State a 33-28 lead at the half.
North Carolina hosts No. 14 Louisville this Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
