CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Carolina women's golf shot 7-under par 281 on Sunday during the first round of the Cougar Classic. Four Carolina golfers were under par including Bryana Nguyen who shot 69 in the opening round. Carolina is in second behind Furman who finished 10-under par.

“I'm very pleased with the team's start today,” head coach Jan Mann. “They stayed focused throughout the round. Bryana had two eagles on the back nine which really gave us a boost. We're looking forward to continued strong play tomorrow.”

Nguyen's 3-under par round was highlighted by two eagles on the back nine. Nguyen was 1-over after 13 holes but eagled the par-5, 444-yard 15th hole and the par-5, 460-yard 18th to get to 3-under par. Nguyen is tied for sixth overall. Lexi Harkins posted a 2-under score rolling in four birdies and two bogeys. Harkins is tied for 15th. Leslie Cloots and Kelly Whaley carded 1-under par 71s on Sunday. Whaley had five birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Cloots had three birdies and two bogeys. The pair is tied for 20th. Freshman Brynn Walker shot 7-over par.

Furman jumped out to an early lead at 10-under par. Carolina's close behind in second at 7-under par. Wake Forest is at6-under par and in third. Tied for fourth is Auburn and UCF at 4-under par. NC State and Michigan are tied for sixth at 3-under par.
