Tar Heels Open Fall Racing At Princeton Chase
October 30, 2016 | Women's Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – The UNC rowing team raced at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, opening fall competition against the most competitive field the Tar Heels will see all year.
In the women's varsity 8+ field of 59 crews, Carolina's first varsity eight was 43rd in 16:07.308 and the second varsity eight was just behind in 47th at 16:14.840.
“I thought the 2V had a great race and did what we asked them to do,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “They got bumped a few times and clashed oars a few times but that didn't deter them from being focused, determined and reaching their goals.
“The 1V did not put their best foot forward and we definitely have some work to do to get ready for next weekend at the Hooch. This team has a tremendous amount of speed so it's just finding the right combinations for next week and I feel confident that we can.”
In the women's novice 8+, UNC's novice eight was eighth of 18 boats in 17:44.983.
“We need to mix things up a little for next week to see if we can find a little more power,” said UNC assistant coach Anthony Brock, who directs the novice squad. “The walk-ons are ready to race next week and it should be a very exciting race in Tennessee with two novice boats headed to see what they can do.”
Carolina races again on Saturday at the Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn.
