DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Gab Major led the way with a hat trick as the third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team won 6-0 at Davidson on Tuesday evening. The Tar Heels improved to 10-2 on the season with their only mid-week game of the fall. The Wildcats fell to 2-10.

“I was very pleased with the quality of play,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “This weeknight game is unique for us – we got on the bus right after classes, and we head home right after the game – and I think it's good for us to work on adapting to different situations. I thought we started strong and were able to maintain a high level of play throughout the game.”

Sophomore Malin Evert started the scoring just over four minutes in., notching her second goal of the season to put the Tar Heels ahead for good. In the 13th minute of play, sophomore Ashley Hoffman added another, assisted by Eva van't Hoog. In the 24th minute, Major got her first to make it 3-0. Senior Lauren Moyer set up the goal with a cross that Major tapped in from the left side.

Major scored again in the 30th minute, this time on a cross from freshman Eef Andriessen. Van't Hoog added a goal just over a minute later, scoring from just inside the circle to make the game 5-0 at halftime.

The only goal of the second half came with just under three minutes to play, when Major send a backhand shot just inside the crossbar to make the final score 6-0. With her three goals on the night, she now has eight for the season.

UNC outshot the Wildcats 24-1 and drew eight penalty corners to the home team's two.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a home Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against Virginia on Friday. Game time at Francis E. Henry Stadium is 6 p.m. The Tar Heels will honor members of the 1995, 1996 and 1997 NCAA Championship teams at halftime.
