Virginia Upends Tar Heels
October 7, 2016 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (8-2-1, 3-1-1 ACC) broke through first with a goal in the 37th minute. David October delivered a perfect cross into the box and Walker Hume redirected the ball with his head into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The Tar Heels took their lead into halftime, and the advantage remained until Virginia scored on a header from Pablo Aguilar in the 53rd minute.
The goal snapped a streak of 412 minutes, 41 seconds since last conceding against William & Mary on Sept. 20.
In pursuit of taking the lead back, Alan Winn hit the post in the 60th minute. Zach Wright forced Cavalier keeper Jeff Caldwell to make a diving save to his left just over a minute later.
The offensive pressure continued for Carolina. Mauricio Pineda hit a rocket on a free kick that was saved by Caldwell. Moments later, a bicycle attempt by Tucker Hume was hit directly to Caldwell as he single-handedly kept the match square at 1-1.
Virginia (6-2-3, 1-2-2) later scored on the counter by Wesley Wade, that was setup by a through ball from Nicko Corriveau in the 78th minute.
Carolina outshout the Cavaliers by a 22-5 margin. Caldwell made seven saves, while James Pyle made one for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina hosts UNC Asheville on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
