Aney/Carter Crowned National Champs
October 9, 2016 | Women's Tennis
The Tar Heel tandem outlasted the fifth-seeded Pepperdine team of Luisa Stefani and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai in the championship match. Aney and Carter won the first set, 6-2, but saw the Waves push the match to a third and final set with a 6-2 win in the second.
“I haven't processed it all yet,” said Aney. “Being out here and representing North Carolina and to bring the championship home is an unreal feeling.”
The super breaker was an epic battle between the two squads, but a volley winner from the sophomore Aney was the difference in victory for the Tar Heels - 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (9).
Aney and Carter had only played one previous doubles match together, coming last season when Aney was a freshman, before this week out in California. Over the four-day event they defeated three teams ranked in the top-8 nationally by the ITA.
“I've had an amazing four years at Riviera for the All-Americans and this is a great cap to that,” said Carter. “All credit to Jessie; I'll re-live that inside-out backhand at 9-9 for the rest of my life.”
The win is the second ITA national title for Carter, who teamed up with Whitney Kay last fall to win the 2015 National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship. The victory on Sunday locks up an automatic berth for Aney and Carter in the field next month at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
By virtue of Carter reaching the singles semifinals she is also guaranteed a spot in that draw as well.
