November 14, 2016 | Wrestling
TROY, N.Y. --- Joey Ward swept a trio of matches at 141 pounds and Joey Moon knocked off a pair of ranked opponents to lead the North Carolina wrestling team at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College. James Szymanski, Ethan Ramos and Cory Daniel also won a pair of bouts for the Tar Heels, who return to Chapel Hill to host Old Dominion Saturday at 8 p.m.
Ward improved to 6-1 on the young season with wins over Wisconsin's Cole Martin, Rider's Evam Fidelibus and Lock Haven's Ronnie Perry, the No. 19 wrestler at 141 pounds. The victory over Fidelibus was an 11-3 major decision, Ward's second major of the year.
Moon built on his fifth-place finish at the Southeast Open with a pair of ranked wins. He opened the day with a 7-4 decision over No. 9 Jake Short of Minnesota before closing the competition with a sudden-victory win over No. 15 B.J. Clagon of Rider. His lone loss Sunday was a 10-4 decision against Lehigh's Jordan Kutler.
In his first competition since representing UNC at the NWCA All-Star Classic, Ramos finished 2-1 at 174 pounds. The reigning ACC champion at the weight pinned Lock Haven's Tyler Wood in 3:46 before outlasting No. 17 Nick Wanzek of Minnesota, 8-7. He was in another high-scoring tight affair to close the day, falling to No. 9 Zahid Valencia of Arizona State, 11-10.
Szymanski was 2-1 with wins over Arizona State's Joshua Krammer and West Virginia's Devin Brown at 125 pounds. On the other end of the roster, heavyweight Daniel bested Rylee Streifel of Minnesota and Joseph Bexley of The Citadel in overtime. His lone loss was a 5-1 decision to No. 7 Ross Larson of Oklahoma.
