Bergner Signs with UNC Women's Golf
November 17, 2016 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL - The Carolina women's golf team has signed Ava Bergner to a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of North Carolina and play for the Tar Heels, head coach Jan Mann announced Tuesday. Bergner, hailing from Heidelberg, Germany, is the 10th ranked golfer in Germany.
"We are looking forward to having Ava join our team in the fall of 2017,” said Mann. “Ava is an exceptional athlete in that she played both basketball and golf at the highest level throughout much of her junior career in Germany. Once she decided to concentrate solely on one sport, she began to excel with her golf. Ava is not only an exceptional athlete but also a great student. She will make an immediate impact on our team and we are very excited to have her join our family."
On joining the Carolina family, Bergner said, “For me, the special thing about UNC is that you get the chance to become the best version of yourself. You're given all of the things and all of the possibilities a person needs to become successful in both academics and athletics. You're given a chance to form your life like you want it to be, which is in my eyes everything a student-athlete could ask for!”
Bergner first began playing golf in 2010. She won the German women's team championship in 2016, the German girls under 16 team championship in 2015 and finished runner-up at the 2015 Doral Publix. Other notable results include third at the German girls' under 16 championships, winning every match while finishing seventh individually at the European girls' team championships, winning the 2016 German women's team championship with an undefeated record, and winning her 2016 club championship. Before focusing on golf, Ava was also part of the south-German selection team for basketball, winning the regional and states basketball championships. Bergner was also nominated to compete for the German girls' national team in 2015.
