Tar Heels Drop Close Dual At App State, 18-16

BOONE, N.C. --- Ethan Ramos won by technical fall, and Joey Ward and Danny Chaid each had major decisions, but No. 25 North Carolina dropped a tight dual at No. 23 Appalachian State 18-16 Sunday afternoon at Varisty Gym. James Szymanski was also a winner for the Tar Heels, who could not overcoming losing six of 10 bouts to drop to 1-1 on the dual season.
Szymanski got the day started for Carolina with an impressive 8-4 win over Vito Pasone at 125 pounds. Colby Smith tied the dual with a 5-0 win over Tyrone Klump at 133 before Ward took the mat against ASU's Irvin Enriquez. Ward was in control throughout and put the Tar Heels back in front with a 12-3 major decision, his fourth bonus-point win of the year.
Appalachian State (3-0) took its first lead of the day with decisions in each of the next three bouts. Gavin Londoff upset No. 16 Joey Moon 5-2 at 157 before No. 17 Forrest Przybysz blanked Jack Clark 5-0 at 165.
Ramos then lifted Carolina back even with the Mountaineers courtesy of his first technical fall of the year. The junior All-American dominated Marcus Johnson in a 20-5 third period tech fall to even the dual at 12.
ASU briefly retook the lead thanks to a 3-2 overtime win at 184, but Chaid's first major as a Tar Heel put UNC up 16-15 with one bout to go.
No. 9 Denzel Dejournette gave Appalachian State the team victory, besting Cory Daniel at 285 by an 8-2 decision.
