Tar Heels Open 2016-17 Campaign At Southeast Open

Five placers led by runner-up Chip Ness paced the North Carolina wrestling team in its initial competition of the 2016-17 season Sunday at the Southeast Open in Roanoke, Virginia. Ness dominated the early stages at 184 pounds, scoring three straight bonus point wins, including a tech fall over Princeton's Kevin Parker in the quarterfinals.
Joey Ward (third place, 141 pounds), A.C. Headlee (fifth, 141), Joey Moon (fifth, 157) and Cory Daniel (fifth, 285) also placed in the open tournament for Carolina. In the freshman/sophomore event, newcomers Andrew Gunning (champion, 285), Josh McClure (second, 141) and Devin Kane (third, 174) were UNC's top performers.
Ward, who was an All-American at 141 pounds last season, beat Duke's Zach Finesilver 4-3 to take third place.
Moon led off the day with a pin of Appalachian State's Alex Lewis and rebounded from a loss with three straight victories, including a major decision over Edinboro's Chase Delande, to finish fifth.
Daniel also responded well from an early-round loss to run off four consecutive wins for a fifth-place finish in the heavyweight bracket. He had a first-period pin of Old Dominion's Eric Hall and a major decision against Edinboro's Terrence Cheeks on the day.
Carolina will return to the mat next Sunday when the Tar Heels travel to Albany, New York, for the Journeymen Classic.
