February 20, 2016 | Track & Field
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of North Carolina track and field teams sent a handful of distance runners to the UCS Invitational on Saturday and saw Morgan Ilse come out with a win in the women's mile.
“It was kind of a last chance for people on the bubble to get into ACCs,” cross country head coach Mark VanAlstyne. “The women's DMR certainly ran better and the goal was to get into the fast heat at ACCs and I think we accomplished that. Otherwise I thought Morgan Ilse ran a good race in the mile for an indoor PR.”
Ilse ran 5:00.76 in the mile to take first overall outpacing second place by 0.04 seconds. Mattie Blue, also in the event, ran 5:07.75 for ninth. Lucy Biles finished 12th and Caroline O'Hea was 24th.
The women's DMR team took fourth overall at the meet and clocked in at 11:29.90. Lizzy Whelan, Jewel Christian, Blake Dodge and Josette Norris were the four legs of the race.
Sophomore Logan Carroll placed 10th in the men's mile at 4:17.81 while Richard Miller was just behind in 11th at 4:18.12.
Stephen Mulherin and Carl Geiger took second and third respectively in the men's 5,000.
The Tar Heels return to action tomorrow when they host the Kent Taylor Invitational. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. and go until 3:45 p.m.
