Carolina Squads Both 3-2 At Philadelphia Invitational

The North Carolina fencing teams came away from the rescheduled Philadelphia Invitational Sunday with matching 3-2 records. The women scored victories over New Jersey Institute of Technology (20-7), Haverford (22-5) and Drew (25-2), while the men beat Lafayette (21-6), Haverford (17-10) and Drew (22-5).

In women's foil, freshman Sydney Persing led the Tar Heels with a 9-4 record. In women's sabre, three UNC competitors had outstanding days: Noa Allen was 13-2, Meredith Bozentka was 12-3 and Sarah Hanvy was 11-4.

In women's epee, both Erin O'Neill and Sara Moreno finished 9-6.

On the men's side, Alex Burte was the top Tar Heel in foil with an 8-2 record. Matthew Garrelick finished 12-2 to lead the way in men's sabre, and Matthew Shlimak was 9-3 in men's epee, with Michael Gopman-Slonim just behind at 8-3.

The event was originally scheduled for January but moved back a month due to a winter storm.

Next up for the Tar Heels are the Atlantic Coast Conference Fencing Championships, held this year at Notre Dame. UNC hosted the 2015 event, which marked the return of men's fencing to the ACC for the first time since 1980 and the debut of women's fencing as a conference sport.
