UNC Rolls To 6-1 Win At Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The North Carolina men's tennis team rebounded from its first loss of the season to earn a convincing 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Miami. Playing at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, the top-ranked Tar Heels improved to 16-1 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the win.
After falling 4-3 at FSU Friday, Carolina started strong against the Hurricanes, claiming the doubles point. UNC's Andrew Gores and Ronnie Schneider won 6-3 in the No. 3 spot, but Jack Murray and Brayden Schnur fell 6-4 at No. 2. That left the doubles point the hands of the Tar Heels' No. 1 team, Brett Clark and Robert Kelly, who rallied to win 7-5 and put UNC up 1-0.
The Tar Heels dropped just one singles match, and that one was because junior Brayden Schnur, playing at No. 1, had to retire in the first set due to injury. After that, the Tar Heels swept the other five, with the second through fourth spots winning in straight sets.
Junior Jack Murray, who lost in singles Friday for the first time all spring, wasted no time in earning his team a point, dispatching Niclas Genovese 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. Next off the court was Clark, who beat Fermin Calvo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. At the No. 2 spot, junior Ronnie Schneider also won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3 over Max Andrews to seal the win for UNC.
The other two spots played to third sets but held strong to add to the Tar Heel total. At No. 5, sophomore Robert Kelly won his first set 6-2 over Kevin Bondar but dropped the second 6-0. He came back to win the third 7-6.
At No. 6, freshman Blaine Boyden earned his second singles win of the weekend, beating Bernard Tefel 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Next up for the Tar Heels is an ACC home match on Friday against Louisville. Action at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center beings at 3 p.m.
