March 16, 2016 | Baseball
Spencer Trayner (1-0) worked 1.2 scoreless innings and stranded a pair of runners in the fifth to earn his first win of the year in relief.
Lynn opened the scoring in the second with his first home run as a Tar Heel. Three batters later, Cody Roberts' safety squeeze plated Sutherland to give Carolina its first lead of the night. Miller's walk loaded the bases and chased starter Evan Voliva (0-1) before Pate greeted Davis Kirkpatrick with a three-run double. Ramirez capped the eight-run frame with his third homer of the year, a mammoth shot to right center.
Carolina (13-2) scored a single run in the third on Datres' RBI double and added four more in the sixth, with Miller's two-run triple the big blow. Logan Warmoth's two-run double highlighted a four-run eighth.
Charlie Yorgen had three hits for East Carolina (11-6), while Kirk Morgan had a pair of singles and drove in two runs. A total of 5,213 fans showed up for the top-20 intrastate matchup, the third-most ever to attend a game at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
UNC hosts Elon Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Tar Heels' first home night game of the season before a three-game ACC series vs. Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park starting Friday.
