PITTSBURGH, PA. - North Carolina senior Lexi Cappalli has been named the 2016 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Scholar of the Year.
A math major with a minor in business administration, Cappalli has been one of the Tar Heels' most consistent performers both athletically and academically since arriving in Chapel Hill four years ago. She has competed in the all-around in 27 of the last 32 meets and is expected to do so again this weekend in Pittsburgh.
"We are very happy for Lexi, and proud of the way she represents Carolina," says head coach Derek Galvin. "Since her first semester as a Tar Heel she has shown a strong commitment as both a student and as an athlete. She has enthusiastically embraced the Carolina experience and made the most of the opportunity she has had as a member of our campus community. I'm very pleased that she has been recognized as the 2016 EAGL Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. I feel it is well deserved."
Cappalli earned first-team All-EAGL honors on floor exercise and second-team in the all-around as a sophomore and was a second-team all-league performer on the uneven bars, floor exercise and all-around as a junior. A native of Kildeer, Ill., Cappalli is a four-time member of the All-EAGL Scholar-Athlete Team.
Earlier this year, Cappalli was named the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award winner for gymnastics, recognizing outstanding academic performance during her career at UNC. She is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is a Faculty Athletics Committee Representative for all Carolina Student-Athletes.
