Carolina Just Six Back After Griffin's Second 68

The North Carolina men's golf team sits just six shots back in fifth place after the second round of the Schenkel Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club.
Just seven shots separate the top six teams at the par-72, 6,947-yard course, and 11 of the 13 teams are under-par for the tournament.
After his opening-round 68, his lowest of the year, sophomore Ben Griffin continued his steady play with another 68 that included six birdies to sit in a tie for fifth at 8-under 136. Junior Carter Jenkins posted a 2-under 70 in the second round to tie for 14th at 5-under 139. Junior Henry Do and sophomore William Register tied for 30th at 2-under 142, while Joshua Martin sits at 6-over 150.
Michael Johnson of Auburn leads the way by one shot at 11-under 133 after a 7-under 65 in the second round. J.J. Grey of Georgia State and Davis Womble of Wake Forest sit in second at 10-under 134. Cameron Young is in solo fourth at 9-under 135. Will Cannon of UAB and Griffin round out the top five at 8-under 136.
Auburn and Georgia State share the 36-hole lead at 23-under 553. The Tigers blew the field away with a 19-under 269 second round with 27 birdies among the team and four players in the top 20. Auburn won the event last year after a second-round 269 and an astonishing 41-under 823 total. Wake Forest and Vanderbilt are tied for third at 22-under 554. North Carolina sits in sole fifth at 17-under 559.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow with tee times beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET off Nos. 1 and 10. Carolina will tee off starting at 9:15 a.m. alongside Vanderbilt and Kentucky. For more information, visit golfstat.com or GoHeels.com.
