Carolina Shows Talent At Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH – The University of North Carolina track and field programs competed at the Raleigh Relays on Friday and showed tremendous success. The Tar Heels made a statement on Friday with individual wins and top national times.
Ceo Ways may have made the biggest splash on the day. Ways ran 46.43 in the 400 to finish second overall and the top collegian in the field. Ways' time ranks No. 1 in the NCAA this year. 800 runners Cory Nicholls and O'Neal Wanliss showed some 400 speed running 47.99 and 48.77.
Joey Souza earned a collegiate win in the men's long jump going 23-8 ¾ (7.23 meters). Souza led a Tar Heel bunch that placed well in the event. Darryl Shaw took fourth at 22-5 ¼ (6.84 meters) while Zay Paschall finished sixth at 22-4 ½ (6.76 meters).
Lizzy Whelan looked like she could be running at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with her performance in the 1,500m. Whelan ran 4:21.32 to take fourth overall. Morgan Ilse came in at 4:31.15 in 18th.
Mark Derrick turned in a lifetime best performance in the men's 5,000m running sub-14:00 for the first time. Derrick timed in at 13:54.71 and ranks No. 5 on UNC's all-time list. His time ranks No. 1 in the NCAA this year.
Stephen Mulherin also had an impressive performance in the men's 10,000m. Mulherin finished with a personal best time of 29:23.75 and finished eighth overall.
Josette Norris took on some tough competition in the women's 5,000m and finished fifth overall at 16:22.08.
AJ Hicks took fourth in the men's discus at 168-4 (51.31 meters).
Alexis Gannon also placed fourth in her event, the long jump. Gannon jumped 18-7 ¾ (5.68 meters).
