Tar Heels Win 5th In A Row, 13-12 At BC

NEWTON, MASS..—Third-ranked North Carolina built an 8-1 lead in the first half and held on to win at No. 12 Boston College, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon. Sammy Jo Tracy and Ela Hazar led the way with four points apiece as the Tar Heels won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 8-2 overall this season, 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
BC, which was coming off a 13-8 win over second-ranked Syracuse last week, falls to 6-4, 1-3.
Tracy had three goals and one assist and Hazar had two goals and two assists. Molly Hendrick and Kelly Devlin added hat tricks for the Tar Heels, Aly Messinger had three assists and Marie McCool had two goals and one assist. Gianna Bowe had an assist.
Tracy also had eight draw controls, setting a new UNC single-season record in the process. Tracy has 76 draw controls this season, breaking the previous school record of 75 set by Sarah Scott in 2014.
For the Eagles, Kenzie Kent had two goals and two assists and Caroline Margolis and Kate Weeks both scored three goals. Sarah Mannelly had a goal and two assists, Tess Chandler scored twice and Brooke Troy had one goal.
The Tar Heels raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first 20+ minutes of action, with Hendrick and McCool both scoring twice during the run. After Kent scored for the Eagles, Tracy scored her second goal and Devlin scored her first as Carolina led, 8-1, with 5:39 left in the opening half.
Boston College closed the first half on a 3-0 run, then scored the first goal of the second half to make it 8-5 with just over 28 minutes remaining in the contest. Hendrick stopped the run with her third goal of the afternoon with 27:21 left, but the Eagles scored five of the next six goals to cut the lead to one goal at 11-10 with 16:49 remaining.
Tracy and Devlin scored back-to-back goals in just over two minutes to build a 13-10 lead, only to see Weeks and Margolis score for BC to make it 13-12.
Tar Heel goalie Caylee Waters (8-1) and the Carolina defense held the Eagles scoreless in the final 8:23 to preserve the victory. Waters made seven saves and went the distance in goal for UNC.
Carolina will return to action on Wednesday at home versus Virginia Tech.
