Tar Heels T-5th After First Round of ACC Championship
April 15, 2016 | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot 10-over par 298 in the opening round of the ACC Championship on Friday. Carolina is tied for fifth with Clemson after the first round.
"Overall the team played well and hit the ball great today," head coach Jan Mann said. "They got off to a great start with some tough starting holes and finished strong. They gave themselves a lot of birdie opportunities and I believe they will make more putts the next two days.
"I am excited for the team and the progress they have made over the last few weeks mentally and with their short game. If we can go out and continue to play like champions the next two days, I know we will have a fantastic tournament."
The Tar Heels had a well rounded team effort with each golfer between 1 and 5-over par. Possibly the biggest highlight of the round is that no Tar Heel earned more than a bogey on a single hole.
Leading the Tar Heels in the first round is Elizabeth Mallett who shot 1-over par 73 on the day with four birdies and five bogeys. Mallett is tied for ninth overall. Only a stroke behind is freshman Kelly Whaley who posted a 2-over par performance. Whaley was one of five golfers to have an eagle on the par-5 18th hole today. It's Whaley's first collegiate eagle and the first by any Tar Heel golfer this year. Whaley is tied for 12th. Leslie Cloots finished 3-over par and is tied for 18th. Her round was consistent with just three bogeys. Bryana Nguyen shot 4-over par and is tied for 27th while Lexi Harkins finished 5-over and tied for 38th.
Atop the team leaderboard is Virginia at 5-under par. Duke and Wake Forest are tied for second at 6-over. NC State is in fourth at 9-over. North Carolina and Clemson are tied for fifth at 10-over.
Leading all individuals is Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest and Lauren Coughlin of Virginia at 6-under par. Leona Maguire from Duke is in third at 2-under.
The Sedgefield Country Club features a par 72, 6,089-yard layout.
