No. 13 Tar Heels Drop Series Opener, 6-1
April 23, 2016 | Baseball
Carolina (26-13, 9-10 ACC) had leadoff doubles in both the first and fourth innings but Dunshee (6-3) worked out of trouble in both instances. The Tar Heels were hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position on the night.
Craig plated the game's first run with an RBI single in the first. He then scored after a leadoff walk in the fourth before going out to left center for a solo homer in the sixth.
That would prove to be more than enough support for Dunshee, who successfully pitched to contact throughout the game. The Deacons (24-17, 8-11) were stellar behind him, with left fielder Kevin Conway and second baseman Nate Mondou making highlight reel plays in a 1-2-3 sixth.
UNC finally got to the Wake starter in the eighth, but Miller's RBI groundout provided the lone run of the frame. Cody Roberts and Kyle Datres led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Miller chased home Roberts. But Dunshee got Tyler Ramirez and Logan Warmoth to end the threat, and Wake added three runs in the bottom half to put the game away.
Gallen (4-4) allowed five hits and struck out seven over 6.2 innings of work to take the hard-luck loss.
The series continues Saturday afternoon at 4 with J.B. Bukauskas going opposite Wake's Drew Loepprich.
