No. 11 Tar Heels Fall To Asheville, 3-2
April 7, 2016 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- Joe Tietjen made a diving catch for a game-ending double play to lift UNC Asheville to a 3-2 win over No. 11 North Carolina Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Tietjen robbed Tyler Ramirez of a potential game-winning hit and threw to second for the final out of the game. Logan Warmoth had two hits and an RBI to lead the Tar Heels, who open a three-game series with Virginia Tech Friday night at 7.
Asheville (8-22) scored a pair of runs in the first three innings to take a 2-0 lead against UNC starter Rodney Hutchison (0-1). The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 3-0 on a Scott Kobos RBI single in the sixth before the Tar Heels finally got on the board.
Warmoth plated the first run of the night for Carolina (21-8) before a Brandon Riley RBI double pulled the hosts within one in the bottom of the sixth. But Danny Wilson (1-1) and five relievers limited the Tar Heels to just the two runs, as Jordan Carr came on with the tying run aboard in the ninth and got the final three outs for his first save of the year.
Carmine Pagano scored two runs and Pete Guy had two hits for the Bulldogs, who recorded their first win over UNC in eight tries.
Carolina returns to action Friday night at 7 for the first of three against Virginia Tech.
