Carolina T-18th After First Round of NCAA Championships
May 21, 2016 | Women's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot 10-over par 298 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships. Carolina is tied for 18th place but is only a few strokes from cracking the top 10.
“The team actually played much better than what our score indicated," head coach Jan Mann said. "They had a couple of hiccups on the back nine but otherwise played very solid golf. We are looking forward to teeing it up again tomorrow and hopefully moving up the leaderboard.”
Freshman Kelly Whaley led the team in the first round at 1-over 73. She had one birdie and two bogeys. Leslie Cloots was 2-over par with three birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey. Senior Elizabeth Mallett was 3-over par. Bryana Nguyen and Lexi Harkins each went 4-over par on the day. Nguyen had a team-high four birdies in the round.
Carolina will continue tomorrow with the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. Live results can be found on Golfstat.com as well as the ncaa.com.
